SSE forms joint venture to develop £300m waste-to-energy plant
SSE has created a joint venture to deliver a £300m energy-from-waste plant at its Ferrybridge power station in West Yorkshire.
The 50:50 partnership with Wheelabrator Technologies, known as Multifuel Energy Ltd (MFE), is due to start construction on the 68MW multi-fuel facility towards the end of this year.
Work is expected to take three years and when operational, the electricity generated will be sold to SSE.
The plant is designed to generate electricity and heat from a range of waste-derived fuels provided by 3SE, SSE’s joint venture with waste management giant Shanks.
The company intends to develop a new mechanical biological treatment (MBT) and anaerobic digestion (AD) plant to convert waste collected from Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster councils.
Paul Smith, SSE’s managing director of generation, insisted the multi-fuel facility was not intended to replace the 1,000MW coal-fired plant at Ferrybridge, which will close in 2015 under the European Large Combustion Plant Directive (LCPD).
“This new multi-fuel plant will provide additional diversity to SSE’s generation portfolio and make a useful contribution to ensuring we have reliable energy supplies for the future,” he said.
“The transactions that make up this project represent a strong partnership between four major players in the multi-fuel sector, who are committed to making a serious level of investment in this technology. This partnership creates a great platform to develop multi-fuel technology in the future.”
