The owner of a tyre reprocessing plant where a massive blaze broke out is to appear before court.

Representatives from Murfitts Industries Ltd, of Wisbech Road, Littleport, will be at Ely Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, October 26.

More than 2,000 tonnes of shredded rubber product caught light at the recycling plant on August 21 last year.

Thick, black smoke caused misery for local residents and business owners for weeks after they were told to keep their premises sealed.

St George’s Medical Centre in the village was also inundated with people complaining of chesty coughs and breathing difficulties.

The fire kept going for seven weeks before the flames were finally extinguished.
Investigations by the Environment Agency and the Health and Safety Executive have been continuing ever since.

The company faces a charge of treating, keeping or disposing of controlled waste in a manner likely to cause pollution of the environment or harm to human health, contrary to two sections of the Environmental Protection Act 1990.
