New SDTC call for proposals

Ottawa, Canada (SDTC)- Sustainable Development Technology Canada, a Government of Canada initiative that finances and supports the development and demonstration of clean technologies, has announced its ninth call for funding applications (Statements of Interest - SOI). The closing date for submissions is March 15, 2006. The call includes applications for technologies that address climate change, clean air and - recently - clean water and clean soil issues.

Prospective clean water technologies will look to optimize Canada’s water and waste-water infrastructure, improve water conservation, update existing diagnostic tools and methods, and address public concern over drinking water safety.

Soil-improvement technologies will aim to prevent, treat or contain the contamination of soil, improve water retention, crop yield and vegetation cover, and support brownfield redevelopment to enhance land value and use. Solutions that mitigate environmental impacts such as soil remediation, or that remove pollution and generate value such as brownfield redevelopment, will also be considered.

“We encourage integrated solutions that deliver air, soil and water benefits while helping to prevent environmental damage up-front,” said Vicky J. Sharpe, president and CEO of SDTC. “Ideally, the technology solutions we support will be relevant to a broad number of locations across Canada and beyond, with the goal of achieving greater sustainability for all of Canada’s economic sectors.”

To date, SDTC has completed seven funding rounds, allocated $169 million to 75 clean technology projects, and leveraged $446 million from project consortia members. SDTC currently manages $615 million in projects. This represents nearly a 3:1 ratio of industry-partner contribution to SDTC investment.

In eight calls for SOIs since April 2002, SDTC has received more than 1,084 applications from more than 2,600 companies and organizations, representing $9.2 billion of clean technology project potential.

SDTC holds two rounds of funding each year, beginning with SOIs in January and August. The next call for SOIs will be on August 23, 2006.
