Klean Industries Sharpens Focus on Global Technology Licensing Through KBR Alliance
Tire Pyrolysis Technology Licensing
Klean Industries has restructured its growth strategy around one idea: license the technology globally rather than build every plant itself. The vehicle is an exclusive alliance with KBR Inc. (NYSE: KBR), under which KBR leads worldwide sales, marketing, engineering and project delivery for Klean’s TyreNova℠ tire pyrolysis platform, while Klean supplies the technology, technical leadership, operator training and project development that make a licensed plant actually run.
The split matters because it removes the two things that usually stall an end-of-life tire project: engineering capacity and bankability. A licensee no longer negotiates with a technology vendor and an EPC contractor separately; the alliance offers an integrated route from evaluation through feasibility, engineering and execution, with a pathway to contractually defined performance guarantees.
Proven Process, Not a Pilot
The technology underpinning TyreNova℠ was acquired from Carbon Resources Recovery GmbH and is commercially proven, not a demonstration unit. A commercial-scale reference plant has operated on this process for close to a decade, producing recovered carbon black, tire pyrolysis oil and steel as finished, offtake-ready products at consistent commercial offtake quality.
Architecturally the platform rests on three interdependent stages — kiln, quench and thermal afterburner — engineered together to hold emissions down while keeping carbon quality consistent. That integration, from tire preparation through recovered carbon black finishing, is what a licensee is buying.
Licensing and Flagship Projects Working Together
Global licensing does not replace direct development. Klean continues to lead strategically significant projects itself, including its Australian initiative with Viva Energy, which is evaluating a facility to process end-of-life tires with the resulting tire pyrolysis oil intended for co-processing at the Geelong refinery. Flagship projects prove the commercial model; licensing scales it.

License the Technology or Have It Built Turnkey
With KBR delivering engineering and Klean delivering the process, a tire recycling project can be taken on either route: license TyreNova℠ and develop it yourself, or have the alliance build it turnkey with performance guarantees behind it. Both routes start from the same commercial-scale operating reference, which is what makes the package bankable rather than speculative.
