Klean Industries Unlocks Urban Oil Fields Through Tire and Plastic Pyrolysis

Urban Oil Fields: Tire and Plastic Pyrolysis

Klean Industries is advancing a simple but powerful idea: the next generation of oil fields is not buried underground, it is stacked in tire piles and baled plastic across the world’s cities. End-of-life tires and mixed plastic waste are hydrocarbons that have already been extracted, refined and manufactured once. Through advanced thermal conversion, Klean returns that embedded energy and carbon to the economy instead of sending it to landfill or incineration.

What An Urban Oil Field Really Is

The term describes waste streams that behave like a renewable hydrocarbon reserve. Unlike a conventional field, an urban oil field replenishes itself every year, because vehicles keep wearing out tires and households keep generating packaging waste. The resource is distributed, above ground, and close to the industrial users who need feedstock. Klean’s position is that these streams should be engineered as a supply chain, not managed as a disposal problem.

The Conversion Pathway

Pyrolysis heats feedstock in an oxygen-free reactor so the material decomposes rather than burns. Waste plastic yields a hydrocarbon oil that can be refined into fuels or petrochemical feedstock; roughly one tonne of mixed plastic waste can produce around 950 litres of oil. End-of-life tires yield recovered oil, recovered carbon black and clean steel wire, with the process gas recycled to supply much of the system’s own heat demand. Klean operates at commercial scale rather than pilot scale, and its technology portfolio is supported by a commercial-scale reference plant.

Klean’s Approach

Klean delivers turn-key projects: feedstock assessment, process selection, engineering, equipment supply, construction and commissioning. The emphasis is on bankable yields and genuinely market-ready products, particularly refined recovered carbon black rather than unprocessed char, because product quality determines whether a project earns a return.

Unlock Your Urban Oil Field

Every end-of-life tire and bale of mixed plastic already sitting in your region is a hydrocarbon reserve waiting to be converted — one tonne of mixed plastic waste yields around 950 litres of oil.

Klean delivers it as a turn-key, performance-guaranteed package through the KBR alliance, backed by a commercial-scale reference plant and a license-first model designed to be bankable from day one — zero pilot risk.
