Purifying and removing inherent impurities and contaminants out of recovered carbon black is very difficult due to the strong interaction between the solid arrangement of particles and aggregates and how they interact. Because of such properties, carbon materials including carbon blacks are normally used for absorbing or removing impurities, for example, activated carbon used for purifying drinking water. Dispersion is another key issue for reclaimed carbon black as is the problem with impurities, and also pellet quality. In terms of dispersion, a powder or fluffy form is generally the best, but it is not well received by the compounding industry due to loadability, dustiness, shipping/handling costs, as well as air pollution issues. Today, the carbon black industry relies mostly on pellets in one form or another: dry, wet, oil, encapsulate, and/or flake. Each method has its advantages and disadvantages depending on the carbon application.
