ReOil Joins Zeppelin Systems Sustainable Tire Alliance

Friedrichshafen, Germany — Over the past few weeks, Friedrichshafen-based plant engineering firm Zeppelin Systems has released various reports on new partner alliances in the area of tire recycling. Now, just in time for the start of the Tire Technology Expo trade fair which takes place in Hanover from March 21 to 23, 2023, the company is revealing what lies behind these many partnerships. Under the umbrella of the newly founded “Zeppelin Sustainable Tire Alliance”, Zeppelin Systems together with its international partners is striving to shape a sustainable future for the tire industry and make even better use of existing potential. Polish company ReOil came on board as a new partner on March 13, 2023.

Each of Zeppelin Systems’ partners contributes its individual, innovative, technical, and technological expertise to the tire production value and process chain. For example, French company Regom sorts old tires using artificial intelligence. In contrast, the Italian technology group RubberJet & Vertech uses high-pressure water jet technology to break down old tires into their components with little environmental impact. Polish Group Rezykl recycles old tires into high-quality secondary raw materials and develops stabilizers for asphalt mixes from textile fibers. German company Entex devulcanizes rubber using a planetary roller extruder, while Nano Technologies refines raw recovered carbon black. “From sustainable material recycling to raw material recycling and cleaning and refinement of recycled materials, to extraction of high-quality secondary raw materials, the Zeppelin Sustainable Tire Alliance combines all forms of expertise in this field under one umbrella,” explains Guido Veit, Vice President Sales for Polyolefins, Rubber, and Silos at Zeppelin Systems GmbH. “In conjunction with Zeppelin Systems’ excellent turnkey plant engineering solutions, this creates the perfect symbiosis for the sustainable tire production of both today and the future,” adds Dr. Markus Vöge, CEO of Zeppelin Systems GmbH.

A new partner on board: Poland-based company ReOil

The Zeppelin Sustainable Tire Alliance acquired another partner in the form of Polish company ReOil on March 13, 2023. This company operates in the area of raw material recycling and breaks down used tires into raw materials such as steel, oil, and recovered carbon black (rCB) by means of continuous pyrolysis. Founded in 2010, the company built Europe’s largest plant for recycling old used tires using pyrolysis in 2015 (in the Polish city of Bukowno). Since then, the facility has been recycling around 20,000 tons of used tires every year, with another plant that will triple capacity to around 60,000 tons of used tires per year currently in the planning phase. Another special thing about ReOil is that the company holds a number of important certifications such as ISCC EU, ISCC PLUS, ISO 14001, and ISO 9001 – proving the highly economical and environmentally friendly nature of the pyrolysis process used by ReOil. 2

The concept behind the Zeppelin Sustainable Tire Alliance

To support the circular economy in the tire production sector, the quantity of high-quality tire recyclates available for the production of new tires needs to be dramatically increased. Zeppelin Systems as an integrated solution provider with many years of experience in the tire industry, and the Zeppelin Sustainable Tire Alliance as a superordinate technology network, provide all the solutions needed to achieve this from a single source. Their approach involves huge production quantities and previously untapped potential, which must be returned to the tire-to-tire production cycle.

As a long-standing solution provider for the industry, Zeppelin Systems is very well-equipped to work at this scale! Customers receive solutions from Zeppelin Systems that are tailored to the needs of tire manufacturers in terms of all tire recycling tasks, the rubber mixing process, and the handling of recycled materials. In addition, the Zeppelin Sustainable Tire Alliance acts as a single source of products and services for customers. This is hugely beneficial for both sides because Zeppelin Systems is familiar with the requirements and challenges of the market. On this basis, the newly-founded Zeppelin Sustainable Tire Alliance is able to build bridges between manufacturers and industry. Through the combined expertise of the technology group, customers can access holistic tire recycling solutions on a sustainable basis, from a single source, and always at the cutting edge. At the same time, the Alliance helps to promote the circular economy and conserve the earth’s valuable resources.

About Reoil

Using its continuous tire pyrolysis process, Reoil has been operating since 2015. In the following years, the technology was improved to complete process continuity in 2019, and in 2020, Reoil achieved a positive financial result. In 2023, Reoil reached revenues of more than €12 million with an EBITDA of €5.8 million, allowing it to finance ongoing development and prepare for investment in a second plant (engineering, permits, site preparation) without involving external investors.

In 2020, Reoil purchased an 11-hectare site on which a new plant with an additional capacity of up to 60,000 tons of ELT, which is being developed in cooperation with Zeppelin Systems G.m.b.H., will be implemented starting in 2024.
