US Electrical Energy Shortfall Coming Soon

Electric generation capacity across most of the United States will fall below industry-standard reserve margins over the next 10 years, according to the latest long-term forecast from the North American Electric Reliability Corporation.

As indicated on the adjacent map, a large section of the Midwest will see capacity shortfalls as early as 2025. Other regions have a longer runway but are still at risk through 2034.

A major driver of the forecast is the surging demand for electricity from Artificial Intelligence and data centers. NERC projects that demand will increase by 151 GW through 2034. Meanwhile, supply is projected to grow by only 49 GW over the same time.
