Tyre recycling scam emerges in UK

Tire recycling scams have come up in United Kingdom where recycling costs are high which results in firms dumping used tires and vanishing without trace. BBC reported last week about a company that took a warehouse on lease in Norfolk and filled the property with fake tyres. Now, the warehouse owner John Archbold is faced iwth the prospect of paying for disposing off the 50,000 tyres.

Several garages sell used tyres to recycling firms for rock botton prices. The Environment Agency is advising tyre fitters to be wary of contractors who will take tyres away for less than 50p per time.

Of the UK’s annual used tyre output, about a third are re-used with or without reconditioning; a further third are recycled into products including carpet underlay and playground surfaces; around 10% form the lining for landfill sites, and the remainder are burned under strictly controlled conditions, etyres.co.uk reported.
