How Canada ranks in clean energy

Canada gets a fairly high mark today for investment in clean energy. A report by the Pew Charitable Trusts, a non-profit group known for its environmental work, says Canada ranked eight among the G20 nations last year, with $3.3-billion (U.S.) in investments.

“Canada saw $3.3-billion invested in its clean energy sector in 2009, an 80-per-cent annual increase and 3 per cent of the G20 total, ranking it eighth overall,” the group said. “… Canada provides policy incentives primarily at the provincial level. Wind and mini-hydro are the leading sectors and benefit from strong support from provincial governments.”

China led the list, with $34.6-billion, knocking the United States out of top spot, emerging as “the world’s clean energy powerhouse,” according to the group.

Overall, investment in clean energy surged 230 per cent from 2005 to 2009, with $162-billion invested globally, Pew said, though noted investment fell 6.6 per cent last year as the global economy slumped.
