Crippled Japanese Power Plant Prepares For Typhoon

The Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) is rushing to put a makeshift roof over a building at the crippled Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear Power Plant in preparation of Typhoon Ma-on.

The roof will cover a hole caused by a hydrogen blast in March, following the earthquake and tsunami.

Fearing high waves, a hose was temporarily disconnected from the “megafloat” barge, which contains relatively low-level radioactive water.

Typhoon Ma-on had sustained winds of 100 mph with gusts to 120 mph Sunday night and was moving north-northwest at 12 mph, according to U.S Navy’s Joint Typhoon Warning Center.

Forecasters expect Typhoon Ma-on to come very close to the island of Shikoku and Honshu Tuesday, possibly makin landfall as a category one or two storm.

Satellite imagery for the Shikoku area is already showing rainbands from the typhoon.

Flooding conditions are possible and warnings of high surf and strong wind have been issued for areas along the storms projected path.
