Liquid Wind Bankruptcy Exposes Growing Risks in Green Hydrogen and E-Fuel Markets

E-Fuel Market Reality Check

Swedish e-fuel developer Liquid Wind has been declared bankrupt after acknowledging in a voluntary insolvency petition that it was permanently unable to meet its financial obligations, court records from the Gothenburg District Court show.

The entire bankruptcy process – from petition filing to formal ruling, was completed in a single day on May 11, reflecting the urgency Liquid Wind itself had flagged in the filings.

The collapse comes just days after the company submitted an environmental permit application for a large-scale e-methanol production project in Ornskoldsvik, northern Sweden.

The voluntary bankruptcy application was signed by the company’s CEO and founder Claes Fredriksson, together with board member Kai Baumgarte. This outcome now puts 31 employees at risk, as stated in the filings. Financial details were not provided.

The insolvency process will be handled by Lars Melin as administrator appointed by the court.

Founded in 2017, Liquid Wind had various projects under development in Sweden and Finland, targeting more than 10 projects by 2030. The production capacity of a standardised and modular Liquid Wind eFuel facility is 100,000 tonnes of hydrogen-based e-methanol per year, capturing 150,000 biogenic tonnes CO2 emissions annually.

The company had financial backing from the likes of Uniper, HYCAP and Samsung Ventures, and had been collaborating with Alfa Laval, Carbon Clean, Siemens Energy and Topsoe. Its flagship Ornskoldsvik project was backed by Industriklivet, a programme run by the Swedish Energy Agency supporting the green transition of the Swedish industry.
