Niersberger & Klean Industries Featured in European Rubber Journal | Tire Pyrolysis Project Expansion

The European Rubber Journal featured Niersberger and Klean Industries for their joint efforts to develop tire pyrolysis projects that recover carbon black and circular fuels from end-of-life tires across Europe.

Companies will jointly roll out projects to produce recovered carbon black, renewable fuels in Europe and beyond.

Vancouver, Canada - Klean Industries Inc. is expanding its established partnership with Niersberger Group, one of Europe’s largest biogas engineering and construction companies, Klean announced on 7 Feb 2023.

According to Vancouver, British Columbia-based Klean, Niersberger has been instrumental in the design-build process for delivering commercial-scale pyrolysis technologies in the EU.

Niersberger, headquartered in Erlangen, Germany, has designed, engineered, and constructed one of Klean’s reference tire pyrolysis plants in Poland.

Under the expanded partnership, Niersberger will provide “a broad range of services, including design, engineering support, and project construction services for Klean’s and its customer projects.”

Klean aims to roll out several turnkey tire pyrolysis projects, primarily in Europe, using its standardized and modular plant designs in a serial production format.

Klean’s expansion plans include redeveloping its project in Boardman, Oregon, which is now slated to break ground in 2023.

With an end-of-life tire processing capacity of 60 kilotonnes per annum (KTPA), the $150-million plant “will be the largest continuous tire pyrolysis plant in North America.”

The facility will be used to recover around 20KTPA of recovered carbon black (rCB) and 25KTPA of recovered fuel oil, Klean’s statement added.

It added that the partners are also working to develop an identical project in Australia, which is now securing a site and entering the detailed engineering stage.

Worldwide, Klean has over 30 tire pyrolysis projects under various stages of development, representing about $2.5 billion in infrastructure investments for the tire manufacturing and recycling sector.

Klean and Niersberger will also explore new business opportunities for integrating Klean’s patent-pending Klean Loop blockchain technology.

This can track & trace all aspects of the supply chain, from raw material acquisitions to equipment manufacturing and delivery of parts and equipment, while monitoring all carbon emissions from all sources.

Expanding the long-term relationship with Niersberger “is mutually beneficial as both parties’ skillsets complement each other,” said Jesse Klinkhamer, CEO of Klean Industries Inc.

“Together, supply chain challenges are reduced, as are project risks. It’s symbiotic relationships like this that allow us to accelerate the creation of the circular, low-carbon economy,” added Klinkhamer.

For the past decade, Klean “has been working to create new value in the tire manufacturing, tire recycling, and carbon black manufacturing sector,” added Rainer Dippold, owner and former managing director of Niersberger Group.

“I am confident that we can replicate this same model of success for other European cities, ” concluded Dippold.
