Companies Unite to Improve Plastic Packaging Sustainability

Recently, it was announced that Dow Chemical Company and Klean Industries, a Canadian energy solutions company, would collaborate to improve plastic packaging sustainability. Dow desires to improve plastic packaging’s sustainability profile and joined with Klean to recover chemicals, oil, and energy from end-of-life waste plastics that would essentially end up in a landfill. The two companies hope this effort will result in the development of low-impact recovery facilities throughout North America. Dow and Klean intend to combine their knowledge, technologies, and resources to create solutions for end-of-life mixed plastics. They have extended a three-year letter of intent in their collaborative efforts. Klean Industries claims that recovering waste plastics for their energy value provides opportunities to minimize dependence on fossil fuels and recover valuable resources. Klean offers advanced thermal conversion technology capable of capturing the innate value in packaging plastics rich in oil; this technology has been developed and used for commercial purposes in Japan. Recently, a team from Dow Chemical Company and Klean representatives visited Japan’s plastics-to-oil recycling plant. Klean owns the technology IP at the recycling plant. Incredibly, the Japanese recycling facility processes PVC, PET, and other mixed plastics, which account for up to 20% of the in-feed supply, in addition to polystyrene, polypropylene, and polyethylene, and simultaneously produces more than 4MWe (power in megawatts) of green electricity. Today, millions of tons of plastic end up in landfills worldwide; Klean is convinced that facilities such as the one in Japan would be successful worldwide, making it possible to recover oil from mixed plastic waste.
