Samsung C&T Completes South Korea's First Off-Grid Green Hydrogen Plant

Green Hydrogen Plant

Samsung C&T has completed South Korea’s first off-grid green hydrogen plant, powered entirely by an onsite solar installation.

First Off-Grid Facility

The construction major finished building the facility in North Gyeongsang, marking the country’s first off-grid green hydrogen plant.

Solar-Powered Production

The plant draws power from an 8.3MW solar installation to produce up to 230 tonnes of green hydrogen per year. Green hydrogen is produced by electrolysing water using renewable electricity, so the output carries no direct carbon emissions, and running the site independently of the grid distinguishes it from most hydrogen facilities.

Samsung C&T’s Role

Samsung C&T is the construction and trading arm of the Samsung Group, active in major infrastructure and energy projects, and here it has deployed its engineering capabilities in the emerging hydrogen economy. South Korea has positioned itself as an early adopter of hydrogen technologies, investing across production, distribution, and transport applications.

Local Refuelling

The green hydrogen produced at the site is used primarily for local hydrogen refuelling, supporting transport applications such as buses and other fuel-cell vehicles within the region that refuel from the supply produced on site.

Green Hydrogen From Waste Streams

Samsung C&T’s off-grid plant makes green hydrogen from solar power; Klean pursues a complementary route to green hydrogen production, generating hydrogen from waste via gasification and methane pyrolysis. That lets operators co-locate fuel supply with the material streams they already process.
