RSB CERTIFICATION

Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) Certification for Sustainable Fuels & Circular Materials

RSB certification helps producers demonstrate the sustainability of eligible fuels, chemicals and circular materials through independently audited requirements. Klean Industries develops chemical recycling and resource recovery projects with RSB certification readiness in mind, connecting feedstock sourcing, technology selection, lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions and supply chain traceability with the requirements of the intended market.

What Is RSB Certification?

The Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) provides a sustainability framework for the bio-based and circular economy. Its certification system addresses environmental and social performance, responsible production and credible sustainability claims across eligible supply chains.

RSB offers distinct certification schemes for advanced fuels and non-energy products. These can cover qualifying bio-based feedstocks, recycled carbon and certain production systems that combine eligible materials with virgin fossil inputs. The appropriate scheme depends on the feedstock, processing pathway, product application and destination market.

Why RSB Matters for Recycling and Resource Recovery

For project developers, industrial buyers and investors, sustainability certification provides an independent basis for assessing how materials are sourced, processed and brought to market. Where required by customers or the target market, RSB certification can support supplier qualification, offtake discussions and sustainability due diligence.

For tyre pyrolysis, plastic chemical recycling and biomass conversion projects, certification planning should begin with the proposed feedstock and product pathway. Using waste as an input does not, by itself, establish eligibility or demonstrate a lifecycle emissions benefit.

Building Certification Readiness into Project Design

Klean helps developers identify the technical and operational information needed to prepare a project for the applicable certification requirements, including:

  • Feedstock sourcing: material origin, composition, classification, supplier records and availability.
  • Process and product definition: technology configuration, material flows, product specifications and intended applications.
  • Lifecycle emissions: energy use, utilities, transport and other data needed for the relevant greenhouse gas assessment.
  • Traceability and chain of custody: documented receipts, processing volumes, inventories and product dispatches, including mass balance accounting where applicable.
  • Environmental and social requirements: project information relevant to permitting, worker protections, resource use and the applicable RSB sustainability criteria.

Connecting Sustainability with Commercial Project Development

Certification objectives should inform equipment selection, operating procedures and commercial planning from the outset. Klean brings these considerations into its phased project development process, from the Detailed Equipment Quotation (DEQ) through the Detailed Feasibility Study (DFS) and Front-End Engineering Design (FEED).

This approach connects sustainability requirements with plant capacity, expected yields, product quality, capital and operating costs, feedstock agreements and offtake requirements. KleanLoop can support the digital capture and organisation of material, operating and emissions data to help build an auditable project record.
