Poland's First Agricultural Biomethane Plant Injects Into Grid

Manure To Biomethane

A 1 MW biomethane plant at Komorów, near Warsaw, has begun producing and injecting renewable gas into Poland’s national grid, described by its developers as the country’s first agricultural facility to connect to the high-pressure network.

Manure And Slurry Feedstock

The facility, located in the Masovian voivodeship, converts only agricultural waste into biomethane, with no input from dedicated energy crops. At full operation it is expected to produce around 20,000 MWh of biomethane a year, turning material that would otherwise release methane into a renewable fuel supplied to households and businesses through the grid.

The Developers

The project has been brought into operation by Swiss energy company Axpo and Polish investor Agro-Biogas. Agro-Biogas, the majority owner, was founded by investors who run farms and a dairy cattle operation in the surrounding Komorowo area, giving the plant a direct link to its own feedstock supply. Axpo holds a minority stake alongside a 20-year agreement to buy and sell the biomethane the plant produces, providing a long-term commercial outlet for its output.

Grid Connection And Product Use

Location was central to the project’s viability: a transmission gas pipeline runs close to the plant and a high-pressure station sits nearby, enabling efficient injection and year-round access to customers. Heat generated during the process is used by the plant itself, while the leftover digestate can be applied to fields as organic fertiliser, closing the loop and returning nutrients to the farms that feed it.

Biomethane From Waste At Industrial Scale

Klean Industries has already delivered biomethane from waste at commercial scale through its Bioenergie Schuby plant in Germany, developed alongside partner Niersberger, converting organic and agricultural residues into grid-ready renewable gas. For any operator watching Poland’s first manure-based facility come online, Klean offers the same engineering path from feedstock handling and digestion through to grid injection.
