Structured Tire Collection Doubles as Public Health Tool in Argentina

Tire Collection Program

A municipal tire collection program in Posadas, Argentina removed 8,523 end-of-life tires from tire shops in the first half of 2026, targeting both public health and clean waste management.

A Six-Month Sweep of Commercial Generators

The operation covered 120 tire businesses across all 12 administrative delegations of the city, carried out over 111 collection days between January and June. That averaged almost 330 tires removed per week, with May recording the highest monthly total at 1,771 tires.

Why Tire Shops Are Priority Sites

Authorities treat tire businesses as priority locations for disease prevention because stored end-of-life tires can hold rainwater, creating stagnant pools where Aedes aegypti mosquitoes lay eggs and develop. Focused, periodic collection at these commercial generators therefore reduces breeding sites far more effectively than general household pickup.

Uneven Distribution Reveals Hot Spots

Collection volumes varied sharply by area. Dolores Norte led with 1,303 tires removed, followed by Chacra 32-33 with 1,257 and Santa Rita with 974, while some outlying delegations recorded far lower totals. That geographic spread helps officials identify where accumulation and breeding risk are greatest.

Collection Is Only the First Step

Removing tires from shops addresses the immediate risk, but the material still needs a proper downstream route. End-of-life tires are bulky and durable, and without genuine recycling or recovery they risk simply moving from commercial premises to new unmanaged stockpiles.
