Circular Carbon Black Goes Global: Orion Expands Production to China
Circular Carbon Black
Orion S.A. has expanded circular carbon black production to China, launching manufacturing at its ISCC PLUS-certified facility in Qingdao with three new grades for tyre and rubber applications.
Scaling Circular Carbon Black in China
The Qingdao facility is now producing three grades of circular carbon black — ECORAX® Circular 200, 210 and 215 — using tyre pyrolysis oil (TPO) as a feedstock. The products are aimed at tyre and mechanical rubber goods manufacturers seeking to increase the use of recycled materials in their products. By turning end-of-life tyre feedstock into a drop-in alternative to virgin carbon black, the launch signals growing commercial confidence in circular feedstocks and gives downstream rubber manufacturers a certified route to lower the carbon intensity of their finished goods.
Why Circular Carbon Black Matters
Carbon black is a reinforcing filler used throughout tyre and industrial rubber manufacturing, and conventional grades are produced from heavy petroleum feedstocks. Circular carbon black closes that loop by recovering value from waste tyres through tire pyrolysis, which yields recovered carbon black alongside pyrolysis oil that can be re-refined into new feedstock. The result is a lower-carbon route to a material the rubber industry depends on, one that helps manufacturers meet recycled-content commitments without compromising performance.
The Feedstock Bridge: Tyre Pyrolysis Oil
Underpinning Orion’s grades is tyre pyrolysis oil, a co-product of scrap tyre pyrolysis that is increasingly valued as a circular feedstock. As more recyclers and chemical producers adopt mass-balance accounting, pyrolysis oil is evolving from a niche by-product into a strategic input that connects the waste tyre supply chain directly to high-value rubber products. For operators weighing their own capacity, securing consistent, high-quality feedstock is often the deciding factor.
What the Expansion Means for the Sector
ISCC PLUS certification signals that the Qingdao operation meets mass-balance traceability standards, an increasingly common requirement as tyre makers and their customers set recycled-content and carbon-intensity targets. The economics of entering this market depend on feedstock access, plant scale and the quality of the recovered material — the precise questions a feasibility study is designed to answer. As established chemical companies commit capacity, the wider waste-to-value sector gains a clear signal that pyrolysis oil and recovered carbon black from scrap tyres are commercially viable, not experimental.
