Tire pyrolysis converts end-of-life tires into valuable commodities using heat in the absence of oxygen. Rather than burning tires, the process decomposes their polymers into reusable materials, positioning it as a core circular-economy technology.

How the Process Works

In tire pyrolysis, shredded tires are heated inside a sealed, oxygen-free reactor. Without oxygen, the rubber does not combust. Instead, its long hydrocarbon chains break down thermally into shorter molecules that leave the reactor as vapor. Those vapors are then condensed into liquid pyrolysis oil, while non-condensable gases are recovered as syngas.

What remains in the reactor is a solid char composed of recovered carbon black and the steel wire originally used to reinforce the tire. After the reactor cools, the steel is separated magnetically and the char is milled and refined into a carbon black product suitable for various industrial uses.

Primary Outputs

The process yields four main streams. Pyrolysis oil is a liquid fuel that can be refined further or blended into fuel applications. Recovered carbon black substitutes for virgin carbon black in rubber, plastics, and coatings. Steel is recycled into the scrap metal market. Syngas can be recovered and used to heat the process itself, improving energy efficiency.
