Pyrum and Pirelli Advance European Tyre-to-Tyre Recycling

Tyre-to-Tyre Recycling

Pyrum Innovations AG and Pirelli have signed long-term supply and offtake agreements that anchor a new chapter in tyre-to-tyre recycling, turning end-of-life tyres back into the raw materials for new European tyres.

A Landmark Tyre-to-Tyre Agreement

The deal places Pyrum squarely at the centre of Pirelli’s European Tyre-to-Tyre initiative. Under the terms, Pirelli will purchase ThermoTireBlack® (TTB) — Pyrum’s recovered carbon black — for use in its European tyre manufacturing operations. In return, Pyrum will receive end-of-life and scrap tyres from defined sources in Germany, closing the loop between a tyre’s disposal and its rebirth.

How the Circular Flow Works

The collection of scrap tyres and their delivery to Pyrum’s Dillingen plant has already been underway for several months, with Pirelli managing the logistics of supplying feedstock. That feedstock is processed through tire pyrolysis, which breaks tyres down into recovered carbon black, pyrolysis oil, and recovered steel — the building blocks that can re-enter new tyre production.

Why Tyre-to-Tyre Recycling Matters

Agreements of this kind signal a structural shift in how the industry treats end-of-life tyres. Instead of downcycling scrap into low-value fill or burning it for fuel, tyre-to-tyre recycling recovers materials to their highest and best use. Recovered carbon black is the pivotal output: a drop-in substitute for virgin carbon black that lets manufacturers cut both feedstock cost and carbon intensity without sacrificing tyre performance. For the wider sector, each long-term offtake contract de-risks investment in pyrolysis capacity and strengthens the commercial case for the technology.

The Case for Feasibility and Scale

For project developers and operators, deals like the Pyrum-Pirelli agreement are a blueprint. A committed offtake partner and a defined feedstock supply are the two conditions that make a tyre pyrolysis facility bankable. Whether the goal is a standalone recovered carbon black plant or an integrated waste-to-value site, a robust feasibility study is the first step toward securing both. Klean Industries supports these pathways end to end — from feasibility studies and plant design through to recovered carbon black and pyrolysis oil production.
