Kent County Partners with AMP to Recover Recyclables from Municipal Waste, Reduce Landfill Reliance

The Kent County Department of Public Works in Michigan is partnering with AMP, a leader in AI-powered sorting for the waste and recycling industry, to deploy an AMP ONE municipal solid waste processing system that recovers valuable commodities from mixed waste before it enters the county’s waste-to-energy process.
By recovering recyclable materials such as cardboard and select plastics before combustion, the system returns those commodities to productive use while improving the thermal characteristics of the remaining waste stream. The result is a waste-to-energy facility that can process more municipal solid waste within its existing operating limits, increase landfill diversion, and preserve regional landfill capacity.
The system will process roughly 25 tons per hour of municipal solid waste, using computer vision and pneumatic sortation to identify and recover recyclables from bagged trash. For Kent County, the deployment integrates recycling and waste-to-energy into a single, unified waste-management strategy — a signal of how municipalities are pairing material recovery with energy recovery to stretch both processing capacity and landfill life.
