Diesel Prices Surge to Record Highs: What It Means for Fuel and Feedstock Markets

Diesel Prices

Diesel prices have surged to record levels in Europe and North America as the Middle East conflict strains refining capacity, according to the International Energy Agency’s September 2026 Energy Snapshot.

Record Prices Across Key Markets

The price of oil has risen sharply in recent weeks as hostilities in the Middle East flared back up. Brent futures, the international crude benchmark, have returned to levels last seen in May and are now more than 40 percent higher than before the war began in late February.

Diesel markets are under particular strain. The IEA’s latest Oil Market Report highlights that diesel prices have recently surged to record levels in Europe and North America, with major ramifications for consumers and the global economy.

Why Diesel Matters Across the Economy

Diesel is a critical fuel used in road transport, shipping, agriculture, and mining. In 2025 it accounted for almost 30 percent of the world’s total oil consumption, which is why price spikes ripple through freight costs, fuel surcharges, and the price of everyday goods.

Supply Losses Behind the Surge

In 2025, Middle East producers exported 3.3 million barrels per day of refined oil products. Since the conflict began, as much as 3 million barrels per day of refining capacity has been unavailable due to attacks and a lack of viable export routes. The recovery has been gradual, with 2.2 million barrels per day of capacity still offline through August.

Persistent diesel-price pressure raises the value of alternative, waste-derived fuels. Pyrolysis oil recovered from end-of-life tires and plastics, and other waste-to-fuel pathways produced through tire pyrolysis, offer producers a lower-carbon fuel and feedstock supply that is insulated from crude-oil price shocks.
