First Ammonia Stays on Track for 2026 FID Despite Topsoe Setback
Green Ammonia Project
First Ammonia says its 200MW green ammonia project in Texas remains on track for construction this year, despite losing a key electrolyser supplier.
Topsoe Deal Termination
The announcement came hours after Topsoe, a Danish technology company known for catalysts and electrolysers, said it had cancelled its supply and service agreement with First Ammonia, after the developer failed to meet key milestones within the contract.
Alternate Technology Planned
Despite the supplier setback, First Ammonia said it will select an “alternate technology” for the hydrogen production element of its Port of Victoria project.
What Green Ammonia Is
Green ammonia is produced using hydrogen made from renewable electricity rather than fossil fuels, and is used both as a fertiliser feedstock and as a potential low-carbon fuel for shipping. Conventional ammonia production relies on hydrogen derived from natural gas, making it a significant source of industrial emissions, which is why decarbonised alternatives have drawn a wave of project development.
Shipping and Fertiliser Markets
The Port of Victoria development is among a wave of large-scale green ammonia projects targeting the shipping and fertiliser markets.
Hydrogen Supply for Green Ammonia
Green ammonia depends on a predictable, low-carbon hydrogen feed. Klean supports green ammonia and hydrogen projects from the feedstock side, producing hydrogen from waste through gasification and methane pyrolysis to underpin downstream production.
