Advancing Tyre Pyrolysis Milling and Drying for Recovered Carbon Black

Tyre Pyrolysis Milling

Milling and drying are the post-processing steps that decide whether a tyre pyrolysis line yields a saleable recovered carbon black or a coarse, low-value powder.

The Post-Processing Bottleneck

Recovered carbon black quality is decided after the reactor, not inside it. Pyrolytic char leaves the process coarse and inconsistent, so operators must grind, dry and classify it before it can substitute for virgin furnace black in rubber compounds. A recurring question in the sector is jet milling versus mechanical impact milling for economical rCB production, and the answer shapes the entire economics of a recovered carbon black line.

Jet Milling and Classification

Fluidised bed jet mills have become the workhorse for turning coarse char into consistent rCB. Andreas Steinlage of Netzsch, speaking on The Tyre Recycling Podcast Episode 90, described units such as the CGS 180 and CGS 100, engineered to reach a fineness of d97 10 micron. Fine particle size matters because it determines how well rCB disperses in compounds and whether it can stand in for conventional carbon black. High-performance classifier wheels and SmartSteam technology, which enables sub-micron cut points below one micron, round out a toolkit built for repeatable output.

Drying as the Quiet Partner

Before char can be milled and classified it must be dried to a stable moisture level, or the powder clumps, the classifier underperforms and downstream quality suffers. The e-jet grinding process reinforces this by cutting energy consumption by up to 30 percent, an important gain where operating cost decides project viability. In a well-designed tire pyrolysis plant, milling and drying operate as one integrated stage, not two separate concerns.

Why Post-Processing Shapes Returns

Long-running commercial experience, including a case study spanning 14 years of rCB production, shows that a tightly classified powder is a genuine feedstock while coarse char is hard to sell. Growing production capacity within the European Union underlines the segment’s momentum, and automated trial databases are helping operators overcome technical challenges faster. For plant developers, pyrolysis oil and recovered carbon black are only as good as the post-processing behind them, so matching milling and drying strategy to feedstock and target markets drives pricing, off-take agreements and returns. Klean supports that evaluation through feasibility studies and complete plant development.
