The aviation sector’s push to cut emissions has created intense demand for sustainable aviation fuel, and no single feedstock pathway is expected to satisfy it alone, prompting growing interest in waste-derived sources such as tyre pyrolysis SAF.

The Supply Gap

Today the dominant sustainable aviation fuel feedstock is vegetable oil, either virgin or waste cooking oil, converted through a hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids (HEFA) route. Analysts expect a surge in supply from alternative biogenic and non-biogenic waste feedstocks, including used tyres, agricultural residues and municipal solid waste, transformed into fuel through more advanced processes such as pyrolysis, alcohol-to-jet and gasification combined with Fischer-Tropsch synthesis.

Tyre Pyrolysis Oil as a Candidate

Tyre pyrolysis oil is among the waste-derived oils being discussed as a potential input that could be upgraded through hydrotreating and hydrocracking, or co-processed into refinery streams, to produce drop-in jet fuel. Proponents argue the oil is a scalable feedstock built on abundant end-of-life tyre waste that can be deployed using existing refining infrastructure, giving it an advantage over more complex alternative supply chains.

An Open Question

Whether the opportunity is near-term or speculative remains the central question. Feedstock constraints are a genuine hurdle, since the same waste streams are also sought by competing sectors such as incineration and bioenergy with carbon capture and storage, and technical qualification plus regulatory approval are cited as key prerequisites before tyre-derived oil can flow into the aviation fuel market at scale.
