Route Optimization Software Cuts Labor and Disposal Costs for Waste Haulers

Route Optimization Software

Waste haulers run tight margins on labor and disposal costs. Two collection companies have turned to purpose-built route optimization software to trim both at once, not just time on the road.

Optimizing for Total Cost

Apex Waste Solutions, a Parker, Colorado collection company, and Atlanta-based Arrow Waste both adopted a logistics platform from ZignEx, based in The Woodlands, Texas. Traditional tools often optimize only on time, but this software is built to lower total cost across the two biggest collection expenses: labor and disposal.

A Purpose-Built Algorithm

Because the algorithm was designed for the waste industry from the start, it accounts for conditions other tools miss, including flow control, swap agreements, service-day assignments, and truck types. A scalable, cloud-based engine computes large routing problems quickly, so operators can see where they stand today and where they could be tomorrow.

Modeling Acquisitions and Synergies

The software also supports strategic mergers and acquisitions. Apex overlays a target company’s data onto its own routes to spot where volume can move into existing routes and others can be eliminated, while Arrow says it has modeled every acquisition with the tool to value synergies more confidently.

From Reroutes to KPIs

After a reroute, the software returns start and end times, volume, duration, and disposal trips per route, which Apex pulls into key performance indicators to measure week-over-week results. Recurring support and training have helped both companies put the system to work without a steep learning curve.

Feedstock Logistics For Tire Recycling

Optimised routing matters as much for end-of-life tires as for household waste. Klean Industries manages the feedstock supply chain behind its tire pyrolysis and recovered carbon black operations, coordinating collection and delivery so plants — including eight rCB plants in India — run on a steady, traceable flow of scrap tires.
