Rotary Kiln for Waste Tire Carbonization

Waste Tire Carbonization

Carbonisation is the process of heating organic material in the absence of oxygen until only carbon-rich char remains, and waste tires are an excellent feedstock for it. A rotary kiln carbonises shredded tires to recover that carbon, alongside pyrolysis oil and steel, turning one of the world’s most stubborn waste streams into a set of valuable products.

How Tire Carbonization Works

Shredded tires are fed into an indirectly heated rotary kiln and raised to carbonisation temperature without oxygen. The rubber breaks down, releasing oil vapour and gas that are recovered, while the remaining solid is a carbon char that can be upgraded into recovered carbon black, a direct substitute for the virgin material used throughout rubber manufacturing.

Why the Rotary Kiln

Tire material is tough, variable and laced with steel, and the rotary kiln’s tumbling action handles exactly that, moving the material continuously through the heated, oxygen-free zone. Its controlled atmosphere and residence time set the quality of the recovered carbon, which is what determines the product’s value in the market.
