Rubber and Tires
Rubber compounding is the largest and most established home for recovered carbon black. In this role rCB serves the same basic function as virgin carbon black — reinforcing the polymer matrix, improving tensile strength, abrasion resistance, and durability. The most common use is as a partial replacement for virgin carbon black in mechanical rubber goods, molded articles, hoses, mats, and conveyor belting. Because these applications tolerate and even benefit from a blend, rCB gives compounders a practical route to lower material footprint without re-engineering the entire formulation.
Plastics and Masterbatch
In plastics, recovered carbon black is used as a pigment and, at higher loadings, for UV stabilization and conductivity. Applications range from masterbatch and film to molded components where a deep, consistent black and good dispersion matter. Here the requirements shift: plastics applications are often more sensitive to ash content and color consistency than rubber ones, so tighter upgrading and classification are needed. Construction and Other Industrial Uses
Beyond the headline categories, recovered carbon black appears in a widening range of industrial materials — asphalt modification, construction products, and various molded and extruded goods where a dark, UV-stable filler is required. These applications are typically more forgiving on specification than inks or high-performance rubber, which makes them an accessible entry point for compounders new to the material. They also illustrate the broader point: rCB is not a one-to-one replacement everywhere, but a versatile industrial filler whose suitability is determined by how well a producer can match grade to use. That matching, done deliberately, opens applications well beyond the initial tire-to-rubber loop.
