Bridgestone Targets Wider rCB Use — and the Feedstock Challenge Behind It
Recovered Carbon Black Feedstock
Bridgestone is moving to expand the share of recovered carbon black in its tyres — and in doing so is restating the barrier every rCB buyer runs into: reliable feedstock and consistent pyrolysis output.
A Major OEM Tips Toward rCB
Speaking at the Global Polymer Summit, Bridgestone R&D chemist for the EMEA region Giorgia Martino outlined the company’s aim for wider rCB use as part of its broader circularity push. The black powder left behind when an end-of-life tyre is broken down through pyrolysis represents both an opportunity and, in Bridgestone’s words, a stubborn technical challenge.
Recovered carbon black, produced through the pyrolysis of end-of-life tyres, offers tyre makers a way to reduce reliance on virgin carbon black — one of the most carbon-intensive materials in the industry.
The Conditions For Scaling
Scaling rCB is not a simple material swap. Bridgestone’s framing of the challenge names three conditions: steady feedstock supply, consistent pyrolysis output, and tyre makers accepting recycled material in performance-critical compounds. Because tyre manufacturing is one of the largest industrial consumers of carbon black, even partial substitution can meaningfully lower lifecycle emissions — but only if quality holds up.
Where Klean Fits
Those three conditions — feedstock, consistency and specification — are the exact disciplines a recovered carbon black plant is built around. A producer that can deliver spec-grade rCB reliably becomes the supplier an OEM like Bridgestone scales with.
