Pyrolysis vs Incineration: Two Thermal Paths, Very Different Outcomes

Pyrolysis Vs Incineration

Pyrolysis and incineration both use heat to process waste, but they are fundamentally different processes with different goals. Incineration destroys material for energy; pyrolysis decomposes it in a controlled, oxygen-limited environment to recover products.

The distinction begins with oxygen. Incineration burns waste in the presence of excess oxygen, reducing it to ash, flue gas and heat. Pyrolysis heats waste in the absence — or near absence — of oxygen, breaking long molecular chains into smaller molecules that can be captured as oil, syngas and solid char rather than consumed.

What Each Process Produces

Incineration’s output is thermal energy and ash, with flue gas that requires extensive cleaning. Pyrolysis, applied to a material like waste tires or plastic, produces a combustible oil, a non-condensable gas that can be burned to sustain the process, and a solid char — for tires, that char can be upgraded into recovered carbon black. The steel in tires survives pyrolysis as a separate salable stream.

That is the commercial difference. Incineration aims to make waste disappear cleanly; pyrolysis aims to turn waste back into materials and fuels that carry their own value. The right choice depends on the feedstock and the end goal — energy recovery versus material recovery.

Partner With The KleanTeam to Recover Value, Not Just Dispose

Safe. Clean. Profitable. One Proven Partner.

If the goal is to turn waste tires and plastics into revenue — recovered carbon black, pyrolysis oil and steel — pyrolysis is the path, and Klean Industries has engineered those plants commercially for thirty-plus years.

Klean’s Key Advantages:

  • ✅ Thirty-plus years engineering commercial tire and plastic pyrolysis plants.
  • ✅ Recovered carbon black (rCB) plants
  • ✅ Signed LOI to deliver five more rCB plants in India.
  • ✅ KBR added Klean’s proprietary TyreNova tire-pyrolysis technology to its IP portfolio.
