Pyrolysis Oil Purification Named Key Innovation Area

Pyrolysis Oil Purification

Evonik has positioned pyrolysis oil purification as a key innovation growth area as the specialty chemicals group sharpens its strategy around resilience, sustainability and future growth.

An Innovation Priority

The company is concentrating on three innovation growth areas, spanning advanced precision biosolutions, accelerating the energy transition and enabling the circular economy, with an expectation of generating significant combined additional revenue by 2032. Pyrolysis oil purification sits at the heart of the circular economy push, reflecting rising global demand for chemical recycling driven by regulation.

The Purocel Product Line

Evonik markets a range of adsorbents and catalysts under its Purocel name that remove impurities from pyrolysis oil, the largest liquid fraction produced when plastic waste is liquefied through pyrolysis. The flagship Purocel 505 combines two process steps, first separating chlorine atoms from larger molecules in a catalytic reaction and then binding the resulting hydrogen chloride, removing up to three times more chlorides than conventional solutions. Purocel 510, a bauxite-based adsorbent, strips out other impurities such as silicon, nitrogen, phosphorus, sulphur and acids.

Supporting Chemical Recycling

For demanding applications, Evonik pairs adsorption with hydrotreating catalysts in its Purocel H series to saturate olefins and aromatics, and it offers modular, pre-assembled purification units under its Rocket technology that can be connected flexibly to both pyrolysis plants and steam crackers without major conversions or prolonged shutdowns. Cleaner pyrolysis oil lets refiners and petrochemical operators safely increase the proportion of recycled content in their feedstocks.

Market Significance

Evonik’s own specialists note that many new pyrolysis plants are being built around the world and that, while most steam cracker operators currently add only limited amounts of pyrolysis oil to naphtha, a significantly higher proportion is conceivable in the medium term as purification improves, underscoring why pyrolysis oil purification has become a strategic priority for the group and the wider chemical value chain.
