Circular Carbon Black Production Expands to China

Circular Carbon Black Production

Orion S.A. is now producing circular carbon black at its ISCC PLUS-certified plant in Qingdao, China, making three ECORAX Circular grades from tire pyrolysis oil instead of conventional feedstock.

Three New Grades

The Qingdao facility is turning out ECORAX Circular 200, 210 and 215, all derived from tire pyrolysis oil. ECORAX Circular 200 is a hard black suited to tires, while the 210 and 215 grades serve both tire and mechanical rubber goods applications. The 200 and 210 grades are designed as full drop-in replacements for the conventional ASTM N326 and N330 grades, giving customers a like-for-like switch to circular material.

Dedicated Feedstock Handling

Orion built dedicated infrastructure at its China and Poland facilities, with separate oil tanks that keep tire pyrolysis oil segregated from conventional carbon black oil. The two feedstocks enter the reactor in separate streams, allowing the company to modulate the blending ratio and precisely control the tire pyrolysis oil content of each grade for consistent quality.

A First Mover

Orion was the first carbon black producer to make carbon black with 100% tire pyrolysis oil and to commercialize multiple ISCC PLUS-certified grades from varied feedstocks across its plants worldwide. Pedro Riveros, senior vice president of global rubber carbon black, said the company now has the complete infrastructure to receive, store and dose tire pyrolysis oil in a controlled way, which is vital for quality consistency and useful for customers running circular commercial strategies.

Meeting Circular Demand

Chief executive Corning Painter called the Qingdao launch a key step in offering circular carbon black grades globally, noting the product line extension gives Orion greater flexibility to meet growing demand for circular products while maintaining the performance, consistency and quality customers expect. The expansion extends Orion’s lead in a segment where recycled feedstock is replacing virgin material across the tire and rubber value chain.
