Real-World Applications of Pyrolysis
Pyrolysis is no longer a laboratory curiosity. It is running in commercial plants that convert tires, plastics, and other waste streams into fuel, recovered carbon black, and energy — closing loops that landfills never could.
End-of-Life Tires
Tire pyrolysis is among the most mature commercial applications of the technology. End-of-life tires are shredded and heated in an oxygen-free reactor, yielding pyrolysis oil, syngas, and recovered carbon black. The oil can be refined or blended as a fuel, the gas can be reused to heat the process, and the recovered carbon black returns to rubber compounding, inks, and coatings as a substitute for virgin furnace black.
Waste Plastics
Mixed and hard-to-recycle plastics that would otherwise go to landfill or incineration can be converted to oil through plastic pyrolysis. Polyolefin-rich streams — films, packaging, and rigid plastics — break down into a hydrocarbon oil with fuel and petrochemical value. The process gives operators a route for the low-grade plastic fraction that mechanical recycling cannot economically handle.
Energy and Fuel Production
The syngas produced during pyrolysis can be combusted to generate heat and electricity, offsetting a plant’s own energy demand or supplying local power. Pyrolysis oil, in turn, is a storable, transportable liquid that can stand in for or blend with conventional fuels. For facilities with large waste volumes, on-site conversion shortens the distance between the waste stream and a usable energy product.
Recovered Materials and the Circular Economy
Beyond fuel, pyrolysis recovers materials that feed back into manufacturing. Recovered carbon black is the clearest example in the rubber and polymer industries, but pyrolysis also separates metals and other inorganics for reuse. Each recovered tonne displaces virgin feedstock and cuts the emissions tied to primary production.
Agriculture and Carbon Storage
Where biomass is the feedstock, the solid char from pyrolysis finds use as a soil amendment that improves water and nutrient retention. Its stable carbon form also represents a durable carbon-storage route, keeping carbon in the ground rather than releasing it through decomposition or open burning.
