Pirelli Advances Closed-Loop Tyre Recycling in North America
Closed-Loop Tyre Recycling
Pirelli has launched its first closed-loop tyre recycling programme in North America, channelling scrap tyres generated during manufacturing back into new tyre production as recovered carbon black.
A North American First
The initiative marks Pirelli’s entry into closed-loop tyre recycling in the region and was developed in partnership with Bolder Industries. Rather than sending production scrap to downstream handlers, the programme captures tyres from the company’s own manufacturing operations and treats them as a dedicated feedstock for tire pyrolysis. It is a departure from the one-way flow that has long defined the tyre industry, where end-of-life tyres leave the factory and rarely return as raw material.
Pyrolysis Turns Scrap Tyres into Feedstock
Collected scrap tyres are processed through pyrolysis technology, which heats the rubber in an oxygen-limited environment and breaks it down into reusable materials instead of burning it. The principal output is recovered carbon black, a circular substitute for the virgin, fossil-derived carbon black used to reinforce tyre compounds and give them their dark colour and durability. Pyrolysis also yields additional streams such as pyrolysis oil and recovered steel, which carry their own value in fuel and metal markets.
Certified rCB Returns to Production
The recovered carbon black is certified to ISCC PLUS standards and marketed under the BolderBlack brand. That certification matters: it gives downstream buyers an audited, traceable chain of custody for a material destined to re-enter the manufacturing line. The rCB is then reintroduced into new tyre production, closing the loop between manufacturing waste and finished product while reducing reliance on virgin carbon black.
Why Closed-Loop Tyre Recycling Matters
Closed-loop tyre recycling turns a disposal burden into a feedstock opportunity. Recovered carbon black gives tyre producers a drop-in circular material that cuts dependence on carbon-intensive virgin feedstock, and it strengthens the business case for diverting scrap tyres away from landfill and incineration. For equipment suppliers, consultants, and plant developers, the signal is clear: manufacturers are moving beyond pilot projects and integrating recovered materials into production at scale, which raises demand for proven tire pyrolysis systems and feasibility support.
