OTR Tire Recycling: From Giant Tires to Crumb Rubber

Tire Recycling

Off-the-road (OTR) tires — from solid forklift tires to giant mining truck tires that tower over three and a half metres tall — are among the toughest waste challenges in the industry. Their extreme durability once meant they were simply buried in the ground, but new legislation and rising demand for sustainable materials are now driving a more circular route.

Turning these colossal tires into reusable material is a highly specialised, multi-stage process. It begins with debeading, which pulls the dense steel bead wire out of the tire to protect downstream equipment. Pre-sizing then cuts the massive tires into manageable sections before primary shredding breaks the rubber down into flowable chunks, and grinding with magnetic separation liberates the embedded steel wire. A final granulation step reduces the material to a fine, high-value crumb rubber.

Crumb rubber, however, is only the first rung of the value ladder. The real prize is recovered carbon black and pyrolysis oil — the raw materials that advanced thermal recycling recovers when end-of-life tires are processed beyond mechanical size reduction.

Turn End-of-Life Tires Into Carbon Black And Fuel

Klean Industries moves tire recycling beyond crumb rubber, converting end-of-life tires into recovered carbon black, pyrolysis oil and steel through continuous pyrolysis technology — delivered turn-key and de-risked with in-house feasibility studies.

Klean has built eight recovered carbon black facilities in India in the past two years, holds a Letter of Intent to supply five more, and its TyreNova tire-recycling technology has been recognised by the Canadian government and added to KBR’s IP portfolio.
