Mexico’s Semarnat is advancing a circular economy model for end-of-life tyre recycling in Morelos, with 13 municipalities now collecting waste tyres for transformation into refuse-derived fuel.
A Regional Recovery Initiative
Mexico’s Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) is championing a resource-recovery approach to end-of-life tyre management in the state of Morelos. The programme ties tyre collection, processing and recycling into a single regional system, reducing the burden of stockpiled waste tyres while recovering their material and energy value. Semarnat Secretary Alicia Bárcena Ibarra recently visited the State Centre for Circular Economy for Tyre Transformation in Jiutepec to review the initiative first-hand.
From Waste Tyres to Industrial Fuel
A central feature of the Morelos model is the conversion of scrap tyres into refuse-derived fuel (RDF), which is then directed into industrial processes. Rather than allowing end-of-life tyres to accumulate, the centre processes them into a fuel stream that displaces other industrial inputs. This resource-recovery pathway echoes the tyre pyrolysis approach that turns waste tyres into fuels and recovered carbon black.
A Growing Municipal Network
The programme is already regional in scope, with 13 municipalities participating in tyre recycling.
