Italy Commits €700 Million to Biomethane in 2027 Budget

Biomethane Production

Italy has committed €700 million to biomethane as part of a wider push to expand domestic renewable gas and shield industry from carbon pricing.

The Council of Ministers approved a package of more than €14 billion on 28 October 2026 as part of the 2027 budget bill. Within it, €700 million is earmarked for investment contributions to biomethane installations, backed by production incentives administered through the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security.

Subsidy Plus Production Incentive

The biomethane programme pairs capital contributions with operating incentives, a structure designed to expand renewable gas supply while helping companies reduce their exposure to the EU Emissions Trading System. The same package sets aside €1.2 billion for roughly 3 GW of new solar and €800 million to restore hydroelectric reservoir capacity.

The Italian biogas consortium CIB welcomed the move, with the measures still subject to parliamentary approval before final amounts and access conditions are fixed.

Why Biomethane Now

Biomethane upgrades biogas from organic waste, agricultural residue and food waste into a grid-compatible renewable fuel, displacing fossil natural gas in transport and heating. A €700 million subsidy over investment costs materially changes the economics of a new plant, and production incentives change what the plant earns every year it runs.

For developers with a bankable feedstock and offtake, Italy is now one of the most clearly funded biomethane markets in Europe.

Build Biomethane Capacity Backed by Real Funding

Funding makes a project possible; engineering and delivery make it real. Klean Industries delivers biomethane and waste-to-energy facilities on a turnkey basis, with design, engineering and components supporting the full route from feedstock to injected renewable gas.

Proof comes from delivered projects, not brochures. Our references include the Bioenergie Schuby biomethane plant in Germany, a commercial facility that turns agricultural feedstock into renewable energy.

You can license the technology or have it delivered turnkey and handed over operating. A feasibility study on your feedstock, gas yield and grid offtake is where a €700 million opportunity starts.
