Goodyear To Close Remaining Chemical Plants as Tire Industry Restructures

Carbon Black Feedstock

Goodyear is fully exiting its chemical business, announcing plans to close its remaining chemical plants in Bayport, Texas, and Niagara Falls, New York, as it refocuses on core tire products and services.

The decision marks the final step in a staged withdrawal. The company has now concluded that leaving the chemical business entirely best serves its strategy.

Scope And Timeline

The closures will eliminate roughly 85 roles, with most of the affected positions in Niagara Falls. Goodyear expects to substantially complete the exit plan by the end of 2027, and estimates total pre-tax charges of $55 million to $75 million. Approximately $30 million of that figure is expected in cash, primarily for plant decommissioning and employee-related exit costs, with the remainder reflecting non-cash charges such as accelerated depreciation.

The company anticipates recording about $35 million of the pre-tax charges in the third quarter of 2026 and a further $15 million during the remainder of the year, with the majority of related cash outflows landing by the end of 2027.

The Financial Rationale

The restructuring is framed as a cost and focus measure. Goodyear expects the actions to improve operating income in its Americas segment by approximately $15 million to $20 million annually beginning in 2027. The wider goal is to concentrate resources on tire products and services, aligning with a broader period of rationalization across the tire supply chain.

For the tire recycling and recovered-material sectors, the movement is instructive. As integrated manufacturers narrow their footprint and shed non-core chemical assets, the value of alternative and recovered feedstocks, including recovered carbon black and pyrolysis oil, continues to gain structural attention as a cost-competitive and sustainable input.
