Germany's Biomethane Tender Draws Scant Bids as the Case for Biogas Tightens

Scaling Biomethane For Renewable Energy

Germany’s latest biomethane auction cleared only a fraction of its offered volume, the clearest signal yet that the country’s biomethane pipeline is struggling to build momentum. The Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur) reports the September 2026 tender for new biomethane installations drew just three bids totalling 6 MW against an offered 21 MW — clearly undersubscribed.

The Auction Numbers

All three bids were successful, at pay-as-bid prices between 23.07 and 23.13 ct/kWh, with a volume-weighted average of 23.12 ct/kWh — sitting just below the 23.13 ct/kWh maximum bid price. It follows an April 2026 auction that accepted biomethane bids for the first time since October 2022, when six bids totalling 38 MW were submitted against an offered 61 MW.

The persistent under-subscription points to a structural gap: German biogas policy settings, from feed-in rules to operating-hour limits, have made it difficult for operators to justify new biomethane capacity even as biomethane’s value as a flexible, dispatchable renewable fuel and a drop-in natural-gas substitute is rising.

Where Biomethane Projects Are Getting Built

Klean Industries has delivered biomethane and biogas projects that pair renewable gas with energy production, including the Schuby biomethane plant in Germany. The opportunity is in well-engineered plants that produce biomethane as a high-value output rather than a by-product — a model that works where the policy and offtake case is built in from the start.
