Eni Seeks Waste Feedstock Ahead of Gela Biorefinery Restart
Reliable Waste Feedstock For Biorefineries
Eni is seeking waste-derived feedstock ahead of the restart of its Gela biorefinery in Sicily, according to trade reporting, as the Enilive plant returns to producing sustainable fuels after a technical stop for maintenance.
The Gela Biorefinery
Gela is one of Eni’s flagship biorefineries, producing hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) through its Ecofining technology from waste and residue feedstocks — used cooking oil, animal fats and other biomass — for diesel, aviation and marine markets. Eni discontinued palm-oil procurement for its Venice and Gela biorefineries as early as October 2022, so the restart depends on securing the right waste and residue feedstock mix.
The scramble for feedstock ahead of the restart is a reminder of the structural squeeze across advanced biofuels: demand for waste-derived fuel is rising faster than the supply of certified waste feedstock.
A Complementary Feedstock Stream
This is where co-processing adds supply. Klean Industries produces tire pyrolysis oil — a waste-derived, partially biogenic liquid — through tire pyrolysis, and has developed projects that co-process pyrolysis oil at refineries, including the Viva Energy refinery co-processing project. Waste-derived pyrolysis oil is exactly the kind of additional feedstock stream that eases the squeeze biorefineries are feeling.
