Fume Extraction Systems for Induction Furnaces: Controlling Emissions at Source

Fume Extraction Systems

Induction furnaces in steel melting shops generate particulate-laden fumes during charging, melting and tapping. A properly engineered fume extraction system captures those emissions at the source and filters them before release.

Why Fume Extraction Matters

Melting steel, iron and other metals produces hot, dust-laden fumes that carry health, safety and compliance risks if left uncontrolled. Capturing and treating those fumes is what keeps a furnace operation within environmental limits and protects the workforce on the shop floor.

The Components of a Fume Extraction System

A complete system is built from a handful of linked stages: a furnace hood or capture point, a suction and ducting network, a spark arrestor or pre-collector, a baghouse filter, an induced-draft fan and a discharge stack with associated controls.

How It Works

The flow path is straightforward: furnace, hood, duct, spark arrestor, baghouse, induced-draft fan, then stack. Fumes are drawn from the furnace, heavy sparks and particulates are removed early to protect the filters, and the remaining fine dust is trapped in the baghouse before clean gas is discharged.

Primary and Secondary Capture

Primary capture uses source-level hoods, while a secondary canopy captures fugitive emissions that escape into the work area. Combining the two gives the most complete coverage and reduces the load on the filtration stage.

The Same Engineering in Thermal Waste Processing

Klean Industries’ thermal plants, from tire and plastic pyrolysis to gasification and waste-to-energy, generate process gases that require exactly this kind of engineered fume extraction and air pollution control. The same source capture, spark protection and baghouse filtration are built into our plant design, engineering and commissioning, and our tire pyrolysis recovers the steel from end-of-life tires back into the steel value chain.
