Environmental Journalism Scholarship Returns for a Third Year
Environmental Journalism Scholarship
SIGNUS Ecovalor and the EFE Agency School of Journalism have launched the third edition of the EFE-SIGNUS Cristina Yuste Environmental Journalism Scholarship, aimed at building specialist reporting on waste management and other complex environmental topics.
A Training Partnership
EFE Agency president Miguel Ángel Oliver and SIGNUS Ecovalor director general Carlos Prieto Menéndez signed the collaboration protocol for the scholarship, which offers young students practical training in environmental reporting alongside professionals from EFEverde, the agency’s dedicated environmental news platform. Applications opened on 18 September, with the initiative reflecting the shared commitment of both partners to training new professionals in an area that is becoming increasingly relevant to society.
Strengthening Specialist Reporting
Oliver said the scholarship aims to strengthen journalistic specialisation in complex issues where high-quality information and rigour are needed. He noted the broader EFE training programme has now run for 13 years and has helped young journalists enter the labour market, forming part of the agency’s commitment to in-house training and dedication in specialised areas.
A Legacy Of Excellence
The scholarship was renamed in 2024 in tribute to EFE journalist Cristina Yuste, who died in June 2021 and is regarded as a leading figure in environmental reporting, known for rigour, professionalism and accessibility. Associating her name with the initiative is intended to preserve that legacy while giving new reporters a benchmark of excellence.
Journalism As Environmental Education
At the presentation of the first edition, organisers agreed that high-quality specialised information is one of the most effective tools for environmental education and awareness. They emphasised that environmental reporting is a highly specialised field whose complexity requires professionals capable of explaining these issues accurately and effectively, which is why applications for the third edition open on 18 September.
CSR And Sustainability
For SIGNUS Ecovalor, the initiative sits within its corporate social responsibility programme, linked both to sustainability and to training journalists in environmental reporting. Carlos Prieto stressed the importance of specialising young journalists in sustainability to ensure the accuracy and rigour of information reaching society.
Reporting The Circular Economy In Practice
The specialist reporting this scholarship cultivates is the same field Klean Industries operates in daily. As a circular economy leader, Klean runs resource recovery and waste-to-energy projects that turn end-of-life tires and waste streams into recovered carbon black, pyrolysis oil and clean energy — the exact stories the next generation of environmental journalists will cover.
