Continuous vs Batch Rotary Kilns: Throughput vs Control

Continuous Vs Batch Kilns

Rotary kilns are operated in two broad ways: continuously, with feedstock flowing in one end and product out the other around the clock, or in batches, with a single charge loaded, processed and discharged before the next. The choice is a trade between steady throughput and tight, repeatable control.

Continuous Kilns

A continuous kiln maximises throughput and fuel efficiency by never stopping. Material moves through the heated drum at a steady rate, so the process conditions, temperature, atmosphere and residence time, stay constant. This is the standard for high-volume duties such as cement, lime, and industrial pyrolysis, where running 24 hours a day spreads fixed costs and keeps product uniform.

Batch Kilns

A batch kiln processes one charge at a time, giving the operator complete control over how long each charge is held and at what temperature. It sacrifices throughput for flexibility, making it the choice for small volumes, varied materials, or processes where each load needs different conditions, such as early-stage development and speciality materials.

Choosing Between Them

The decision comes down to volume and product requirements. Run a steady, high-volume material, and a continuous kiln wins on cost and consistency. Process small or variable quantities where conditions change, and batch operation earns its keep.
