Group II Base Oil Upgrade Needs Vacuum and Chemistry, Not Band-Aids
Group II Base Oil Upgrade
Operating on black fuel margins quietly lost economic sense years ago, and the product that actually earns is API Group II base oil. But a Group II base oil upgrade is not won by nudging an old distillation column; it demands a rebuild of how vacuum, chemistry, and continuous operation are handled from feed to product.
Why Group I Falls Short
Group I oil carries more sulfur and aromatics than modern, tightly tolerated engines can stand. Group II, by contrast, leans on saturates above the 90 percent barrier, sulfur below a strict band, and a viscosity index carried in a tight range, properties that hold cold-start fluidity while protecting the film at operating temperature.
Deep Vacuum Prevents Thermal Cracking
An aging plant running weak vacuum must overheat the oil to evaporate it, and past a threshold the long chains themselves begin to crack, collapsing flash point, adding odour, and darkening the product within days. The fix is a multi-stage high-vacuum train, in which the oil can leave at a much lower temperature and keep its original molecular structure intact.
From Acid Treatment to Finishing
Legacy acid-clay treatment removes impurities but leaves a sulfuric sludge waste that is a disposal and legal problem, and it never reaches the sub-0.03% sulfur Group II requires. The forward paths are selective solvent extraction, which strips aromatics and sulfur without a hydrogen plant, and hydro-finishing, the deeper process that uses hydrogen over a catalyst to produce a water-white, oxidation-stable product.
Continuity Beats Batch
Batch reactors swing temperature with each start and stop, and their output never holds consistent viscosity or color. The upgrade ends in a continuous fractionation train under automation, holding reflux and cut points steady so distinct viscosity cuts land inside the specification window at every pull.
