Birla Carbon: Conductive Carbon Portfolio for Battery Makers

Conductive Carbon Black

Birla Carbon is showcasing its conductive carbon portfolio at The Battery Show North America 2026 in Detroit, presenting Conductex i carbon black grades, Nanocyl carbon nanotubes and blended carbon black-CNT formulations for battery electrodes.

The event runs from 12 to 15 October 2026 at Huntington Place in Detroit, Michigan, with the company exhibiting at Booth 3029. The announcement was issued from Marietta, Georgia on 6 October 2026 and is backed by expanded global manufacturing.

Why Conductive Carbon Matters in a Cell

Conductive carbon creates the electron pathways inside a battery electrode. The additive chosen feeds directly into charge speed, high-rate performance and cycle life, and it also shapes how efficiently electrodes can be manufactured.

Birla Carbon describes the portfolio as offering high purity, class-leading conductivity and uniform dispersibility. The Conductex i grades are additionally positioned to cut solvent consumption and energy use during electrode manufacturing, lowering production cost for cell makers.

The company frames its additives against four industry priorities: charge acceptance, battery capacity, dry coating and solid-state construction.

Next-generation chemistries are explicitly in scope. Birla Carbon points to LMFP, sodium-ion, solid-state and metal-air cells incorporating Conductex i carbon blacks and Nanocyl carbon nanotubes, alongside established lithium-ion producers facing supply chain resilience and fast-charging demands.

Specialty Carbon Is Where the Margin Moved

The direction of travel in this announcement is worth noting. One of the world’s largest carbon black manufacturers is leaning into specialty conductive grades supported by expanded global manufacturing, rather than commodity rubber-grade tonnage.

That reflects where value has migrated. Commodity carbon black competes on cost against furnace capacity and feedstock oil prices. Conductive and specialty grades compete on performance qualification, and qualified material is far harder to displace once it is designed into a cell.

It also sets the quality bar that recovered carbon black is measured against. rCB from tire pyrolysis has established itself in rubber and plastics applications, and the distance to higher-value grades is largely a question of consistency, purity and ash control rather than chemistry alone.

Producers who can hold tight specification windows, document them batch to batch and supply at scale are the ones who move up the value curve. Those who cannot remain stuck in the lowest-margin end of the market.

For anyone building a recovery plant today the lesson is to engineer for specification control from the outset. Retrofitting consistency into a facility designed only for tonnage is expensive, slow and frequently impossible.

The same logic applies to feedstock. Mixed, unsorted tire streams produce variable ash and residual metals; controlled feedstock and controlled process conditions are what separate a saleable specialty product from a filler of last resort.

Build Recovered Carbon Black to a Specification That Sells

Klean Industries delivers recovered carbon black and tire pyrolysis plants on a KBR turnkey basis: performance-guaranteed, 100% bankable, and engineered for product consistency rather than throughput alone.

Our proof is commercial-scale and operating, including a recovered carbon black plant in Poland and delivered resource recovery projects worldwide. Specification control is designed into the process, which is what allows rCB to compete for higher-value applications instead of the commodity floor.

You can take either path. License the technology and build it under your own brand, or have KBR engineer, build, commission and guarantee the facility turnkey. Tell us the grades you intend to sell and we will design the plant backwards from them.
