Boiler Emissions & NOx Control

Boiler Emissions Control

Every boiler produces flue gas, and its emissions of nitrogen oxides, particulates and other pollutants are tightly regulated. Control begins in the combustion chamber and finishes in the stack’s treatment train, and it is designed into the boiler rather than added after the fact, since the boiler’s scale and fuel fundamentally shape what must be cleaned.

How Emissions Are Controlled

  • Combustion tuning, including low-NOx burners and staged combustion that limit pollutant formation at the source.
  • Post-combustion treatment, such as selective catalytic reduction for NOx and particulate filters for dust.
  • Scrubbers, which remove acid gases before the cleaned flue gas is released.

Why Control Is Built In

The emissions profile of a boiler depends on its fuel, its size and its combustion design, so the treatment train is specified alongside the boiler itself. A waste-derived fuel, for example, demands a far more substantial system than clean natural gas, and retrofitting that treatment later is far costlier than designing it in from the start.
