Birla Carbon and Circtec Scale Recovered Carbon Black Production in Italy

Recovered Carbon Black Production

Birla Carbon has commissioned a dedicated production line at its Trecate plant in Italy to finish and package recovered carbon black made from end-of-life tyres.

Closing the Loop on End-of-Life Tyres

The new line processes Continua Sustainable Carbonaceous Material (SCM), a circular material derived from end-of-life tyres, for use in tyres, mechanical rubber goods and plastics. Raw material is supplied by Circtec’s pyrolysis facility in the Netherlands, which began operating in January 2026, under a partnership that links tyre pyrolysis output directly to carbon black finishing and distribution.

Scaling Circular Material Supply

By adding a dedicated finishing and packing line, Birla Carbon aims to deliver large, consistent volumes of circular carbon black to customers worldwide, strengthening supply security across markets. The company has said it intends to return 300,000 tonnes of end-of-life tyres to industry annually by 2030 as part of a broader push toward net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

What It Means for the Market

Recovered carbon black has become a practical substitute for a portion of virgin carbon black in many rubber and non-rubber applications. Partnerships of this kind, pairing pyrolysis output with established carbon black finishing and sales channels, point to a maturing supply chain where circular material competes on both volume and consistency.
