Base Oil Color Problems and How to Correct Them
Base Oil Color Problems
A re-refined base that comes out too dark is not merely a cosmetic shortfall; colour points to residual oxidation, aromatic compounds or a purification step that has not finished. Base oil color problems are best read as symptoms, each with its own correction, and locating the true cause is the first step toward a clear, stable product.
Oxidation Products and Degraded Additives
Through service, heat, oxygen and mechanical stress degrade the lubricant and its additives slowly into heavier, coloured compounds. These oxidation products and deposits can survive into the recovered fraction and darken it from within, meaning the more severe the prior service, the heavier the downstream treatment required to clean the base up.
Aromatics That Survive Distillation
Vacuum distillation separates by volatility and boiling range, not by chemistry, so aromatic, polar and nitrogen-containing components can carry over into the target fraction. The fraction may meet its boiling specification and still look yellow or dark for precisely this reason, which is why a purification stage normally follows the distillation step.
Excess Thermal Stress During Processing
The refinery itself can colour the oil. Excessive temperature, unstable vacuum, over-long residence time or localised heating all crack the material into fresh coloured compounds, so heating harder is not a fix. A stable vacuum lets the lubricant fraction evaporate at a lower temperature, reducing the thermal stress and its effect on colour.
Improving the Finished Colour
Colour is corrected by managing the whole route, not by one step alone. Klean Industries analyses the feed for its main contaminant load, steers the distillation for the least thermal exposure, and adds a matched finishing route such as solvent treatment to lift the remaining colour bodies, tuned to the feedstock and the target specification.

Ship a Base Oil That Holds Its Colour
A steadily bright base oil is evidence of complete, well-controlled processing from the very first stage.
Klean Industries sets the distillation and finishing stages so colour is addressed at its source, not hidden at the end.
