A carbon-black manufacturer does not have to choose between today's specifications and tomorrow's circular raw material. Klean has worked with a specialist carbon-materials developer to validate an engineered approach to blending recovered and virgin carbon black, using our Poland technology reference. Our partners and clients are now extending that work into custom products designed for real carbon-black buyers.

This is a demonstrated commercial integration pathway, not a theoretical replacement. It brings recovered content into the quality-control, handling, compound-development and procurement structures a manufacturer already understands. The value comes from specifying the right blend for a real customer, not announcing a recycled-content percentage in isolation.

The Challenge

Industrial materials do not enter a supply chain by winning a sustainability argument; they enter by passing a specification. Virgin carbon black is a precisely selected reinforcing and functional ingredient, and its grade, dispersion, cure behaviour, processing consistency and delivered cost are built into long-established formulations.

Recovered carbon black brings circular content and a more diversified supply base, but its physicochemical characteristics differ from virgin grades, so a kilogram-for-kilogram exchange is not automatically an equivalent compound. A customer must understand how the finished material behaves in its own process and finished article.

The commercial obstacle is as real as the technical one. Pyrolysis developers often start with a carbon material and go looking for a buyer, while buyers start from approved performance requirements, technical files, packaging, audit procedures, trial protocols and supply continuity. Klean's rCB commercialization experience has shown that qualification and customer relationships matter as much as the plant itself.

Regional supply resilience adds a further driver. Hydrocarbon-linked inputs and international freight are exposed to price volatility and disruption, and where a region has reliable end-of-life tire collection and qualified rCB production, that carbon becomes an additional sourcing option. It does not make a buyer independent of imported feedstock or remove conventional carbon black requirements.

The Solution

Blend around what the customer needs, not what the seller hopes to replace. Klean's collaborative work demonstrated a pathway for manufacturing specification-controlled combinations of recovered and virgin carbon black, using our Poland reference-plant experience as the recovered-carbon foundation. Proprietary equipment arrangements, grades, formulations, counterparties and customer documents remain confidential, and the collaboration does not make the partner's independently developed IP a Klean invention.

An engineered blend lets a buyer assess different recovered-content levels without abandoning the strengths of established virgin grades. The right fraction depends on the end product and its acceptance limits, and developers may examine dispersion, reinforcement, hardness, tensile and abrasion performance, cure kinetics, handling, contamination limits, packaging consistency and repeatability. Those are customer qualification tasks, not universal properties guaranteed by blending.

Industry standards make the discussion more precise. Members of Klean's leadership team, including Dr. Eckart Pelz, Dr. Martin Löffler and Jesse Klinkhamer, participate in ASTM carbon black and recovered carbon black standardization through Committees D24 and D36, giving buyers and producers a clearer shared language for characterization and comparison. Participation is not ASTM certification or endorsement of any specific blend.

The commercial parallel is the staged introduction of ethanol into conventional motor fuels, which created a route for a new input to enter existing markets without immediately replacing the original commodity. The parallel is market adoption and supply diversification, not chemical equivalence, and recovered carbon black is recovered content, not automatically bio-based.

For an industrial client the pathway joins several capabilities: produce a reliable recovered-carbon input rather than a volume of tire char; blend and test candidates against an existing buyer-approved formulation and compare the finished compound rather than the carbon powder alone; align classification, lot traceability, handling and supply records to the buyer's requirements; coordinate the appropriate virgin grade, available rCB output, blending capacity and logistics for repeat orders; and extend from reference validation into customer-specific production only when both performance and economics justify it.

The Outcome

A validated materials route is becoming multiple custom-engineered commercial products. Our reference-plant collaboration established the experience with blending technology and recovered-carbon integration, and partners and clients are extending it for carbon-black customers. Confidential records document more than one recovered-content formulation, but no single ratio or compound property is universal.

For buyers this is a practical way to introduce circular input into a familiar material category, qualified in stages. For producers it moves development toward established vCB distributors and compound manufacturers instead of an uncertain spot market. For investors, a project's value improves when its production plan is tied to real specifications, technical collaboration and repeatable market access.

Klean's advantage is not that blending exists. It is that we connect reference technology, carbon-product knowledge, customer relationships, standardization work and new project development, which is how recovered-carbon adoption becomes a supply-chain strategy instead of an environmental claim.

TOP 3 INVESTOR TAKEAWAYS

Three priority lessons selected from the wider experience behind this project. Each highlights a decision that can materially influence technical performance or commercial viability. Through a defined engagement, we apply our broader technology and delivery experience to your project's requirements, risks and opportunities.

1. The integration route has been demonstrated. Klean's collaboration and Poland reference work established a practical basis for engineered rCB/vCB products, so future capacity decisions should build on verified grades and customer acceptance, not speculative substitution percentages.

2. A specification is the route to market. The same recovered-content fraction performs differently across compounds, so qualification, repeatability and purchasing documentation decide which blends customers can adopt and at what volume.

3. Supply resilience is earned through relationships. Qualified regional rCB broadens sourcing and reduces dependence on a single input, and the advantage grows when production, blending, standards and customer offtakes are aligned.

WHAT DO THESE LESSONS MEAN FOR YOUR PROJECT?

For a tire recycler, carbon-black distributor, compounder or rubber developer, the starting question is which engineered grade buyers will accept, not how much rCB you could theoretically sell. We can develop a paid, application-led qualification and supply-integration engagement that assesses the recovered-carbon input, customer needs, blending scope, quality programme and preliminary economics. Where new equipment is required, our paid Detailed Equipment Quotation through Detailed Feasibility Study to Front-End Engineering Design stages establish the engineering and commercial basis before delivery. Collaboration and disclosure remain governed by agreed scope and existing third-party rights.

For equipment developments, our paid Detailed Equipment Quotation (DEQ) defines the preliminary technology and investment basis, followed where warranted by a Detailed Feasibility Study (DFS) and Front-End Engineering Design (FEED). Confidential specifications and proprietary process information are considered under an appropriate NDA and engagement.
